Batman The Long Halloween Jeph Loeb Tim Sale Books Reviews
So, sadly, I still haven't found a Batman story that I like very much. Sign me up for practically any other member of the Bat-family and I'm sold, but Bruce just doesn't keep me entertained.
I was hoping that this would be different. It's got rave reviews, had a plot that genuinely interested me, and a friend of mine said it was one of his favorites. So, yeah, I was excited. But I didn't build it up in my head- I know that for a fact. I was careful to be neutral-feeling going into it because that's how I most enjoy books. It still failed me.
The Long Halloween is a bit like a murder mystery whodunnit. Except featuring Batman as the detective. Someone is killing off gangsters on holidays. This "Holiday" killer is becoming more and more of a threat since no one knows who he or she is.
The murder mystery itself was drab. I did like trying to guess who the killer was, but there weren't actually any clues laid out for anyone (even Batman) so it was basically just wait until they confess. And it irked me so much because that wasn't what the back promised. Outside of the murder mystery a lot time is spent developing the villains (and Gotham could take a few cues from them, let me tell you). I did like some of those aspects, but, again, it's not what I signed up for.
I had a love-hate relationship with the art. It was very art-y, but not something I would generally seek out. It was cool in a noir-esqe way, but also a bit off putting since everything was pretty much a caricature.
I'm sure some people absolutely love this book. Sadly, I'm not one of them. Maybe my next foray will be better.
This is a nice little collection of a Batman series from the late '90s titled, "The Long Halloween." Each book takes place during a different month in the span of a year, which is a clever approach. Jeph Loeb is a great writer, he has a knack for writing a good mystery which is perfect for a Batman story. Sometimes the interactions between mobsters gets a little slow, but most of the time the story is intriguing. Artist Tim Sale adds a very bleak, noir quality to the images. His illustrations are hit and miss with me. I appreciate the looming shadows he adds to Wayne Manor or the gothic architecture of Arkham Asylum and Gotham City itself. He also draws a decent Batman and a sexy Catwoman. However, his illustrations of Joker, Scarecrow and Poison Ivy are a bit nutty looking. It's effective overall, but when Loeb later used Jim Lee's art for the "Hush" story, it was a major improvement! If you haven't read this story, you may recognize some plot points that were later included in the 2008 movie, The Dark Knight. This is not a perfect book, it has a few shortcomings - hence the 4-star rating, but overall I definitely recommend giving it a read. The more I read, the more I had to keep reading.
I love a good Batman comic, and this is certainly amongst the best. The story takes place over the course of the year, and Batman has to discover the identity of a killer that only strikes on holidays. The introduction describes this as a follow up to Batman Year One, so we see a younger Bruce Wayne that is still working out his role as Batman. The focus is much more on the killer and Harvey Dent. Having read this after watching The Dark Knight, it's easy to see the influence this book had on the movie.
My favorite part of this book has to be the heavy reliance on the crime families of Gotham, specifically the Falcone. There is always mention of how screwed up Gotham is and why there is a need for Batman and using the mafia as a foundation is perfect. Are they the source of all of Gotham's problems? No, but the sheer level of organized crime speaks to why Batman even exists. It is pervasive and the attacks of Holiday begin to shake things up. The use of these more mundane villains, even with the inclusion of a bunch of Batman's iconic foes, helps to set this book apart.
The mystery behind the killer is played out pretty well too. There are so many people that would have the motive and opportunity to attack the members of the Falcone family that it becomes difficult to pin down who is Holiday. Extra points for the use of Calendar Man because he is a strange villain that fits in so well.
Despite being an older comic, I enjoyed the art. There were some images that are certainly indicative of trends in comic art at the time, but for the most part it stands apart. The coloring and use of shadow are both great. There's a reason this is considered a classic Batman title. Definitely worth a read.
There's a very good reason this comic influenced The Dark Knight. It's so good!
I love the mystery to this story. Action-packed Batman is always fun, but Batman made his mark because he's the world's greatest detective. Trying to solve the mystery along side Batman and experiencing all the twists and turns is so rewarding. The dialogue is also very well written, and Loeb gives each character their own great bits of solid dialogue. I always enjoy reading his stories.
As much as I love a jam-packed Batman story like Batman Hush, I feel like some villains should have been cut out. They're fun to have since you don't expect it, but I was overwhelmed. This is a smaller story that doesn't need the complexity of a Justice League story.
To be completely honest, I love Batman Hush, but only by a small percent more than The Long Halloween. The fact that this can contend with Hush shows just how great this comic truly is. Batman The Long Halloween is (to no one's surprise) another great Batman story.
